Caring for Your Pets in Warmer Weather

As the warmer weather of spring arrives, many of us enjoy spending time outside with our furry companions. Taking our pets for walks is a popular activity that benefits both the pet and the owner. However, there are a few things to keep in mind when planning these special times with our four-legged babies.

It’s important to be aware of the ground temperature when taking your pet for a walk. If the pavement or other surface is too hot for your bare feet, it’s likely to be too hot for your pet’s sensitive paws as well. Even if your pet is wearing booties, extreme heat can seep through and cause discomfort. It’s best to plan your walks during the cooler parts of the day to avoid any potential issues. It’s important to be aware of what’s growing nearby.  Some plants can be harmful to pets if ingested.

When your walk is over, it’s tempting to let your pet stay outside for a little while longer. However, it’s best to limit their time outside and make sure they have access to plenty of water and a shady spot to rest.

We all love to spoil our pets with treats, but it’s important to choose healthy options.

Great treat choices:

  • Peppers
  • Carrots
  • Blueberries – frozen ones make a refreshing treat
  • Bananas – thinly sliced and given sparingly
  • Pumpkin – cooked, without salt or other added ingredients (also helps with several possible problems—upset stomach, digestion, and to help prevent hairball build up)

Treats to avoid:

  • Grapes
  • Raisins
  • Saltine crackers

What is your pet’s favorite treat or if you don’t have pets, what type of pet do you think you would enjoy having?
