Collage Workshop with Hollie Chastain

September 8 @ 3:00 pm - 6:00 pm

artist and illustrator

Workshop description:

Come celebrate paper! This workshop has useful information for those who are new to creative endeavors, new to collage or have experimented before and want to learn some new techniques. We will look at different methods and applications of this extremely versatile medium to keep in mind as we explore substrates, materials and adhesives. For part of the class we will be focusing on a technique using vellum and graphite paper as a stencil to break down a sketch into separate elements before rebuilding the composition from materials layered in gel medium on a wooden panel. Attendees will take home their own UHU glue stick and the work they create during the class.

Materials supplied by student: Small scissors that are comfortable to you. I recommend the Fiskars 5 Inch Detail Scissors but any around that size that you find easy to work with on detailed cuts will work. Also, bring along any images, magazines, books, ephemera or printed paper that you find interesting and might want to use. Try to avoid papers with a very glossy surface.

Materials supplied by instructor: Xacto knifes, cutting mats, UHU glue sticks, gel medium, small wooden panels, pencils, tracing paper, carbon paper, bin of magazines/found paper/etc.

About the Instructor:

Hollie Chastain is an artist living and working in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Following studies in both fine art and business she spent several years in marketing and graphic design before returning to the studio to launch a career as an artist and illustrator. Hollie uses mainly paper, mixing found images with modern colors and compositions to create work full of originality and narrative.  Influenced by her love for found ephemera, she has become best known for her works created on the covers from vintage, tossed-aside books letting the scribbles, stamps and history found there contribute to the composition. She works in her home studio as both a gallery artist and illustrator with clients such as Warner Music Group, Smithsonian Magazine, Gestalten Books and Spirituality and Health Magazine as well as many others. Her first book, If you Can Cut You Can Collage was released in November 2017 through Quarto Publishing.
